Ooops!... We did it again - Early 2000's fashion returns with four ‘blast from the past’ items

Updated: Apr 23, 2021

Dresses over jeans and flared pants with crop tops. Like marmite, either you love it or you hate it. Who else remembers Britney Spears’s girly hairstyles and crop tops in her music videos? And of course, the iconic red bodycon jumpsuit.

This summer, styles from the 2000's have made a comeback as many brands have noticed a huge rise in the need for these fashion items.

1. Low Rise Jeans

It is time to get rid out of your high waisted jeans and swap them for low rise ones. It was reported by LYST that in 2019 there was a monthly average of 14,800 searches for this trend.

Julia Price, 34, a salesperson at H&M tells us she is not a fan of this trend coming back this time round . “As a person who lived their teenage years in the early 2000s, it’s actually really weird to see the clothes back in stores because it brings back a lot of memories. Some trends are nice to have back and but some of them, like low cut jeans, should’ve stayed in history.”

2. Butterfly Clips

Second on our list are hair accessories such as butterfly clips. Julia finds herself reminiscing on her younger self as accessories she used to wear ‘back in the day’ have made a comeback in retail stores. “I like all the accessories and the really girly things that are coming back. Not that I would necessarily be wearing them myself anymore! Back then, it felt like a good idea though.”

3. Denim & Leather

We all know that leather and denim have never gone out of style. That is why these materials bring us to our third trend.

Carol Arkle, 36, who works as a retail buyer likes to incorporate different fabrics in her outfits. “I absolutely love it! I’m so happy it’s making a comeback! I like how laid back it is and how you can mix and match so many things. I’m probably the only person in my age group who thinks like this.” Brands have now opted for mixing different textiles in one garment and surprisingly denim and leather work pretty well together, as you can see below:

4. Halter tops

Last but not least on our list are halter tops. Popping up as a fashion statement in the late 90s, with celebrity fashion icons like Gwyneth Paltrow rocking the look, this item has once again become a girl’s best friend and it is the perfect piece of clothing to take from a day to evening look. Since the 2000's the halter neck has returned to our wardrobes and it is currently one of the top fashion trends.
