Turn Up the Volume with LockeDown Live Event

Event Management students from BIMM institute have organised a showcase series, offering a variety of music performances from local London artists in an effort to help the industry recover the global pandemic.

The live stream event, LockeDown, was designed to raise money for the charity Music Minds Matter. Performers included Kruz, from East London, whose main musical talents range from soul to Latin, jazz and R&B; Red Sinclair, London-born Hip-Hop artist, and Barry Hendy, who writes his own songs and describes his music as “a connoisseur of pop”.

The event streamed live via YouTube on May the 2nd at 6pm in a studio that consisted of a ‘retro’ theme black light style lighting with BIMM student Stella Drakakis, 27, hosting the event as part of her multiple roles including artist liaison and promoter.

“It’s like A. Reynolds mentions. Playing live is an integral part of the success of any musician, band or artist,” says Stella.

“As we were put into the sticky situation of the pandemic, we still managed to put together a performance made live in support of the fans of music, the creators of music and the economy itself.”

Hip-Hop artist Red Sinclair was the main act of the event, but the comments rolling in on YouTube suggested that Barry Hendy was the real star of the show. One commenter said “Barry actually has an incredible voice! I follow him on Insta.”

In a one-to-one chat with Stella after the show, Barry talked about what inspired him to enter the industry. “I’ve got a very musical family. It kind of started with my nan so she was a very musical person, she couldn’t really sing as much as she wanted to but she was in love with like old male singers like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and kind of that mow town and blues and rock and roll was kind of always there as like a kid.”

The event reached viewers as far as Greece as Georgia Grigoraki, 27, an accountant who’s a fan of start-up musicians and London as a city. “I like watching live events on YouTube that show small artists from around the world. London is a place I’ve always wanted to go to and thanks to online events, I feel like I’m in a concert there!”
